The strategic waterway has remained severely disrupted since early March — a chokepoint through which roughly 20 million barrels of crude oil transit each day. The blockage has sent shipping costs surging and pushed global oil prices sharply higher.
The killing comes amid a rapidly deepening regional crisis ignited by a joint US-Israeli military offensive launched against Iran on Feb. 28. The campaign has claimed more than 1,340 lives to date, among them then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
