Moscow criticizes US redo of ‘Iraqi weapons of mass destruction’ stunt
During an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Sunday, Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia accused Washington of breaching the UN Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He warned that the US had “opened Pandora’s box” and the consequences remain unpredictable. Nebenzia emphasized that by targeting nuclear facilities overseen by the IAEA, the US was once again showing complete disregard for the global community’s stance.
Drawing a historical parallel, Nebenzia compared the situation to the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq War, when the US falsely claimed Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, leading to a disastrous invasion and years of chaos. He warned that the current scenario is no different, describing it as another attempt to manipulate public opinion and inflict suffering on millions in the Middle East.
Russia reiterated that there is no proven evidence Iran is developing nuclear weapons, aligning with past US intelligence assessments dismissed by former President Donald Trump. Nebenzia accused Washington of manufacturing a pretext for military action and dismantling decades of diplomatic progress around Iran’s peaceful nuclear efforts.
He also condemned Western hypocrisy, noting that while many nations had urged “restraint” at the UN, they refused to criticize the US for aligning with Israel’s strikes on Iran. Instead, they placed blame on Tehran for the escalation.
Nebenzia pointed out the double standards, highlighting that Iran remains one of the most heavily inspected countries under the NPT, whereas the US, which refuses to sign the treaty, faces no accountability despite attacking civilians and nuclear sites. He warned that these strikes undermine the IAEA’s credibility and threaten the broader non-proliferation regime, raising the risk of uncontrolled nuclear tensions.
Russia, supported by China and Pakistan, has submitted a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and a return to diplomatic talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
