Syrian Forces Seize Strategic al-Tanf Base Following US Withdrawal

(MENAFN) Syrian government forces have moved into the strategically significant al-Tanf base near the borders with Iraq and Jordan after US troops pulled out, ending a presence that lasted close to a decade.

According to Syrian government sources, the army has entered the facility and established its presence there. The handover follows the departure of American forces, who reportedly relocated to another installation known as Tower 22. That base lies close to the demilitarized zone along the Jordan-Syria frontier, approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) from al-Tanf.

At one stage, about 200 US service members were believed to be stationed at al-Tanf. However, there is no verified information regarding how many American personnel are currently deployed at Tower 22.

The al-Tanf base, which underwent expansion in 2017 and 2018, had served as a key monitoring point for Washington. Equipped with surveillance balloons, the site was used to track the movements of Iran-aligned factions and the ISIS (Daesh) militant group across a vast area stretching from the Jordanian border to the Euphrates River.
