Syria Joins Anti-ISIS Coalition, US Envoy Labels It as “New Chapter”

(MENAFN) Syria’s involvement in the recent gathering of the US-led international coalition fighting ISIS (Daesh) represents a significant shift in regional security cooperation, US envoy Tom Barrack said Tuesday.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Barrack stated: "Regional solutions, shared responsibility. Syria’s participation in the D-ISIS Coalition meeting in Riyadh marks a new chapter in collective security,"

His comments followed Syria’s attendance at Monday’s coalition meeting in Riyadh, where Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and intelligence chief Hussein al-Salama represented Damascus. Barrack also took part in the discussions and held a separate meeting with Shaibani on the sidelines of the event.

A statement issued after the session confirmed that Syria was welcomed as the coalition’s 90th member.

Although the alliance was established in 2014 and has conducted operations against ISIS in both Syria and Iraq, Damascus had not previously been formally included. Syria officially became part of the coalition last November.

Since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in late 2024, the country’s new leadership has been focused on reinforcing stability and improving security conditions across the nation.
