21 Killed, 19 Injured as Bus Overturns on Southern Iraq Highway

(MENAFN) Twenty-one people were killed and 19 others injured Sunday after a bus overturned on the highway linking Nasiriyah and Basra in southern Iraq, prompting Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi to order an immediate investigation into the deadly crash.

Iraq's Health Ministry, in a statement carried by a state news agency, confirmed that Health Minister Abdul Hussein Al-Moussawi was personally monitoring developments following the accident, which involved a bus carrying a number of visitors. The minister ordered medical, health, and ambulance teams to be placed on full alert, directing all available resources toward the emergency response and care of the injured.

Preliminary figures confirmed 21 fatalities and 19 injuries, with the ministry noting that Iranian visitors were among the casualties without specifying their exact number. The injured were transferred to medical facilities, where teams continue to monitor their condition.

The accident occurred in the Al-Batha district of Dhi Qar province, according to a separate statement from the prime minister's office, which confirmed Al-Zaidi was in direct contact with local authorities and relevant agencies overseeing the aftermath.

Al-Zaidi directed authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the crash, ensure urgent medical care for survivors, and provide necessary support to the families of the victims.
